CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“How was it?” I lift one of the cardboard boxes from the back of Dallas’ truck and walk it into the back of the restaurant. We decided to close today for inventory and to fully replenish our stock, buying several boxes of produce from the local farmer’s market. It probably isn’t the best move financially, but the business needed it. I also haven’t spent time with Dallas one on one in what feels like forever. Between his wedding and honeymoon and the running of the restaurant, we haven’t seen much of each other unless it’s to talk about work.

“Honestly, man, I didn’t want to come back.”

“Really?” I scrunch my nose and dip my eyebrows. “You just went to Nashville—how different could it be from here?”

“Oh,” he says matter-of-factly, “it’s different. The music scene is incredible out there, and the barbecue is pretty good.”

“Not as good as ours though, right?” I give him a fake scowl, not caring that he dared to try another place’s barbecue.

“Of course not.” He chuckles and sits at the end of his tailgate, wiping his hands across the top of his pants. The sun reflects in his blue eyes as he stares up at me.

I still haven’t told him about me and Vada. Guilt settles in my bones, realizing I’ve never mentioned it to him. For all I know, Dallas has no clue I’ve had a thing for his sister since the moment he introduced me to her, or that I’ve been sleeping with her for the past three weeks.

I never even told him about the secret we’ve kept for the past couple of years.

“I will say though,” he continues, “it isn’t as weird as Austin. You can’t beat this place.”

“No.” I laugh, shaking my head. “You can’t.”

I grab another box from his tailgate and carry it over before coming back. He’s still sitting on the edge, resting his arm over the side of the bed. His black metal ring glints in the sunlight.

“How does it feel?” I nod toward his ring. Dallas and I used to never discuss our relationships. When I first met him in college, he was already dating his first wife, Hailey. They weren’t married yet, but they were inseparable. As for me, I wasn’t in a relationship as serious as Dallas and Hailey’s, but I was hardly ever alone. For me, it was more about sticking to one woman, committing to her long enough to fulfill what I now know are my father’s dreams and ambitions. They were never mine. I drove out all possibilities of caring about someone more than myself because of my father.

Where I’ve lacked in doing that even once until now, Dallas has managed to do it twice.

He looks at his hand and lowers it to his lap, twisting his ring between his fingers. “It’s great. I know people always say this kind of shit, but it’s true—I don’t know how I got so lucky.”

“Me either.” I give him a smirk and sit beside him on the tailgate.
